Fremantle Ports announces Manjaree Indigenous Art Competition 2024
19 April 2024
Fremantle Ports is thrilled to announce the inaugural Fremantle Ports Manjaree Indigenous Art Competition!
Indigenous artists are encouraged to enter in either of two categories - Open and Youth (under 18), with youth artists able to submit in both categories.
New artworks as well as pieces completed since 1 January 2020 are eligible for entry and multiple entries by the same artist are welcomed. Entries close 5pm 26 June 2024.
The winning artists in each category will receive a prize of $3000 and runners up awarded $1500.
Fremantle Ports Manager Communications and Community Neil Stanbury said the port was excited to be able to once again support the arts and showcase the wealth of talent among Australia’s Indigenous artists.
“The competition will culminate in NAIDOC Week in July, when all entries will be projected by laser on Fremantle Ports’ iconic Administration Building on Victoria Quay, the tallest building in Fremantle.” Mr Stanbury said.
“We can’t wait to light up the winter sky with amazing art.
“The Manjaree Indigenous Art Competition 2024 is part of our commitment to reconciliation and an initiative under our Reconciliation Action Plan.
Manjaree is the Whadjuk name given to the gathering place around Fremantle Port where Aboriginal people engaged in trade and cultural exchange.
“Manjaree is a place with a remarkable Indigenous history and culture and we’re proud to remind people of that through this initiative,” Mr Stanbury said.
